Essential oils are botanical treasures of aromatic compounds used since the beginning of time for their medicinal and healing properties. From the ancient Egyptians to the sacred story of the Bible where the wise men gave frankincense and myrrh to baby Jesus, essential oils have been used throughout history for a multitude of purposes.

Plants give off energetic aromatic vapors. These natural aromatic compounds are then extracted from the seeds, barks, flowers, roots of plants by a distillation process. Like in alchemy, through this process they capture this vital energy from the plants. These energetic compounds are healing and therapeutic and are used for physical and emotional ailments.

Essential oils are used aromatically or absorbed topically through the skin. The molecules of EO's are so small they are easily absorbed through the skin and and can enter the lymphatic and circulatory system quickly. When inhaled, EO's travel through the nose and reach to the olfactory bulbs and then is carried to the Limbic System that regulates many systems including emotions and memory. Essential oils can influence mood and sense of well being.

You can use essential oils as a natural alternative to medications. Medications can have undesirable side effects and contribute to toxicity in the body. Essential oils is a natural way to support the body with healing and emotional support. Here are some common uses of essential oils; Oregano is one of my favorite oils. It is powerful antioxidant and helps to boost immunity. It is an natural antiviral as well. If you are feeling run down or sick, you can apply oregano to the bottom of the feet. Since oregano is a hot oil and can feel hot on the skin, apply a carrier oil to the feet first, such as, coconut oil, then 1-2 drops of oregano. This will help support the immune system. Lavender is another favorite and common oil. It is used to help with relaxation and sleep. You can apply 1-2 drops on your wrist before bedtime in addition to inhaling with a few deep breaths. You can follow the same protocol when feeling stressed out. Lavender is also great to apply to burns. It will immediately sooth the skin and help relieve pain. Peppermint is a mood elevator when inhaled. It is energizing. It is also helpful in opening the airwaves if you are having congestion. It is used to help lower fevers and creates a cooling effect on the body. It also aids with hiccups and headaches. Frankincense and Myrrh both have healing properties. Frankincense helps wound healing and reduces inflammation, while Myrrh has antibiotic properties and used for pain and swelling. Both of these oils are used in religious and spiritual practice and they aid in clarity during meditation. Essential oils are natural supports for the body. There are many oils and they all have many uses and benefits. It is very important if you use essential oils, to research and use reputable brands that are 100 percent pure and laboratory tested for purity. You do not want to use oils that can be contaminated with metals or not 100 percent pure. Since essential oils are very potent, they are used in small quantities. Just like everything in life more is not necessarily better. If you are taking medications, check for interactions. Please make sure to use as directed and follow directions and supervise children. This is not intended as medical advice. Please consult your doctor before using oils.
